How to Avoid a Hybrid IT Implementation Headache

Written by James Weir - 03 may 2016

Hybrid IT adoption continues to grow at an exponential pace. 15% of large enterprises already have a Hybrid environment in place, according to Gartner’s emerging technologies Hype Cycle, with that figure set to grow significantly in the next two to five years.

Enterprises are looking to take advantage of the agility benefits of new fast IT environments without sacrificing the control and security they have come to expect from traditional robust IT datacentres.

Bridging the gap between old and new is the key to headache-free Hybrid IT implementation, but that process inevitably presents a number of significant challenges.

To implement a Hybrid IT environment successfully you need to master these three elements:

Let’s take a look at those in a bit more detail…

Application onboarding and management

You must be able to quickly and easily get your applications up and running where you need them, whether you’re using a robust or fast IT platform.

As you implement a Hybrid strategy, improving your application release processes and choosing the right application delivery platform brings multiple benefits:

Multi-cloud management and monitoring

The nature of a Hybrid IT environment means you will be working across multiple clouds and data points, which can be difficult to keep track of without the right tools and techniques.

At a higher level, you need a "single pane of glass" view – i.e. a starting point at which stakeholders can get a sense of the bigger picture – to quickly and easily see what’s happening where.

If you can’t easily manage elements such as provisioning, orchestration and capacity in this way, you’ll struggle from the start.

Networking

It is absolutely essential to get this part of the process right from the start, or else you risk a huge number of complications further down the line.

Networking can have an impact on anything from performance and bandwidth to security, disaster recovery and business continuity (to name a few). Ensure you dedicate the necessary planning and resource to implement it properly.

New approaches to application delivery …

As the cloud infrastructure market matures, new and established vendors are providing application delivery platforms that are ideal for fast IT computing environments, by combining techniques such as:

Application templating

Modelling the full application stack – from individual OS packages and middleware up to the application and configuration logic – ensures full control and transparency over every level of the stack.

Multi-OS, multi-cloud support

Today’s application delivery platforms must work across multiple clouds, hypervisors and operating systems, with the ability to assemble machine images on any OS, for any cloud. Combined with full stack application templating, this ensures an "assemble once, run anywhere" setup, which is essential in Hybrid environments.

100% automation through APIs

Infrastructure as a service (IaaS) platforms provide automation for computer networking and storage. If your application delivery platforms can’t keep up, then you simply won’t be able to take full advantage of the agility provided by fast IT.
